Long sighted people will have their prescription proceeded by a +plus sign. Short sighted by a –minus sign. The stronger the prescription the higher the number.

Cylinder is only required if you have an astigmatism (visual distortion) caused by an irregular shaped cornea. This condition is fairly common.

A + or – sign indicates the measurement

Axis

Add. This is for the bottom of your bifocals or the amount of extra power that you need to be added for distance This only applies if you have an astigmatism (indicated by the cylinder requirement). The measurement indicates the number of degrees on the axis of the lens that are required.

Plano

This is a lens with no power and is used if you have one perfect eye and one needing correction.

PD MEASUREMENT

Your prescription will not necessarily display your PD (pupil distance). This is the distance between the centre of your pupils (the black dots). See diagram below.

Pupil distance example

You can either use a mirror or friend to help you measure this distance.

If using a mirror, place a solid metric ruler across the bridge of your nose and look straight ahead into the mirror and measure the distance between the middle of one pupil and another.

If a friend helps you, place a metric ruler across the bridge of your nose and look straight ahead. Get your friend to measure the distance between your two pupils.

As a guide, an average PD is 63mm so if you do not provide a measurement we will automatically make up your glasses to this average.
